Curator since 2002, first at the Musée Matisse in Cateau-Cambrésis (2002-2003), then at the LaM - Lille Métropole Musée d'art moderne, d'art contemporain et d'art brut, in 2009 he became director of the Belfort, Lion de Bartholdi and Citadelle museums.

From October 2016 to September 2022, he was Director of the Musées du Centre in Besançon, including the Musée des Beaux-Arts et archéologie and the Musée du Temps-Palais Granvelle, and from April 2021 to September 2022, Acting Director of the Institut Supérieur des Beaux-Arts de Besançon (ISBA). Since October 2022, he has been Director of the MacVal musée d'art contemporain du Val-de-Marne.

Nicolas Surlapierre, also holds a doctorate in art history, author of monographs and numerous articles numerous articles on modern and contemporary art. He has been commissioned some sixty monographic exhibitions of modern and contemporary art.
