Born in 1981. Independent photographer, represented by the agency Picturetank. Worked between France and Afghanistan since 2007.

After studying art and photography at the University of Paris 8, Sandra Calligaro turned to big reporting and made her first trip to Afghanistan in 2007. She finally moved in a few months later. Since then, the photographer has alternated between reports and documentaries for the press, multimedia commissions on behalf of NGOs and collaborations with various artistic institutions.
In recent years, his work as an author has focused mainly on the city of Kabul and the emergence of a new urban class. The project, Afghan Dream , carried out with a grant from the National Centre for Plastic Arts, was awarded the Talent Scholarship in 2013.

LA CASA
- exhibition-event of the winners of the Prize Carré sur Seine, from February 3 to 24, 2023 -

In the stainless steel canteen she bought at the Kabul market, Sandra Calligaro has chosen the objects that testify to her daily movements during the fifteen years she spent in Afghanistan. Burqua, mini Taliban flag, pocket dictionaries, leather net for her horse but also small slippers for her unborn son... To the objects, she joins photos that show a tormented Afghanistan but also the current clash between the vanished dreams of cosmopolitan urbanites and the end of clandestinity for jihadists. She completes her device with a sound creation by Julie Rousse...

She made a 180° turn at the end of her art studies by wanting to realize her teenage dream: to become a war reporter. Following a journalist friend's advice to start with Afghanistan, she will almost never photograph the war directly but will document the transformation of Afghan society from the inside as well as from the outside: heroin users, refugees and exiles, emancipation of the city dwellers under the manna of American funding and lately life since the return of the Taliban.
